Just when I thought...

Thank Goodness for Budman. Just when I thought I was permanently out of ideas to blog about, he brought this home.

It's a shoe-box. (I'm sure you could have guessed that, but work with me here...)

INSIDE the shoe-box, were these.

6 baby rabbits. (I was holding one of them)

He went to his mom & dad's house today, to help them with some auto repairs, yard work etc, and his mother asked him to take care of the nest of rats that were out in the yard. Only they weren't rats. And Budman couldn't "take care of" them. So, he loaded them up in the shoe-box, and brought them to me. I did some Google research, figured out what we needed and my stepmother and I ran out and bought some milk replacer, and some tiny bottles, and tried to feed them. So far, they are a little slow in getting the hang of it, but we made some progress. At this point, though, we're starting to think that they may be a little older than originally thought, so they may actually be weaned.

We don't have any intention of keeping them, so no lectures, please. :)

Normally, he would have left them alone, and not disturbed them, but they would not have survived had he left them. The In-laws dog was already nosing around, and between her and the lawnmower, they would have been goners for sure.

The original plan was to keep them until they were old enough to be released, which we could do here on our property, since we already have plenty of rabbits here. However, I may make a few calls tomorrow to see if there is a local wildlife rehabber who would be interested in taking them.

Either way, we are handling them as little as possible, and have already explained to the kids that they will not be staying. The boys understand about wild animals, and how you can't keep a wild thing locked up, no matter how much you want it, because wild things are meant to be free and wouldn't be happy if they weren't free.

But aren't they just the CUTEST things?????

SOOOO adorable!! My boys love catching giant bugs around my house to stare at and care for, so they'd be in some freaky altered state of heaven to have baby rabbits at home for a bit! Hope there's a rehabber who can help you out!

Way cute!

I don't think they are weaned. I raise rabbits and they should wean somewhere about 6 weeks. A 6 week rabbit should be bigger.

At about 2-3 weeks they will open their eyes, and I would guess they are around 3 weeks old. I would continue feeding them from a bottle for a couple more weeks.

At around 4 weeks their digestion actually changes. It is getting ready for solid food by then, but they still need milk as their mainstay.

You could start having a dish of rabbit food with them, and they will try it a little and get used to it.

Good luck, Mama Bunny!

They are very cute. I tried to help three babies that my dog found in my back yard survive once. They were so little they had no fur and I really thought they were baby rats. Then, I realized their ears were a little different. They were too young though, just a day old or so. They all died by day 6. I was sad.

These look old enough they might make it though! Good luck.

Don't keep them too long. We raised some for the exact same reason & all the sudden about six weeks after we started, they turned on each other & we had to release them.

They are very nearly the same size as the baby rabbit that was living in a thatch of grass at the end of our driveway earlier this summer. I didn't know the little bugger was there until he ran over my foot one day and nearly caused me to die right on the spot. They are much cuter sitting in a box than they are running me over!
