Fightin' It

I'm taking the
Sleep-in challenge. At least, I'm trying to. (For more info, click the picture above)

Select Comfort is encouraging everyone to get an extra hour of sleep per day. They're also have a sweepstakes.

In honor of the contest, I am re-posting a previous Fight the Frump entry, regarding sleep.

An interesting tidbit I haven't shared, is that this post, the one I'm about to re-share, is responsible for my choice of topic for my research paper, which will be due at the end of this term. Since I had already started the research, I decided to delve a little further into the discussion of the importance of sleep with regard to health and wellness. More specifically, for women, the health and beauty aspects related to getting enough sleep.

I chose this topic, because as a mother and a woman, sleep, more specifically, the lack of it, is an important issue in my life. As a woman in my 30s, I have become increasingly concerned with the effects that lack of sleep are having on my health, wellness and beauty.

So, here is my re-posting of Beauty Sleep: Fighting the frump

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Beauty sleep.

I need it. Desperately.

I've read so many interesting facts today about the benefits of a full night’s sleep – and the consequences of deprivation. Even denying yourself one hour a night for a week can lead to decreased speed in reaction time, mathematical problem solving (although, let’s face it – most of us don’t do a lot of mathematical problem solving everyday) and “cognitive work requiring simultaneous focus on several tasks”. In other words, you won’t be able to walk and chew gum at the same time when driving, for example, accidents increase as your total sleep decreases. Missing out on three hours per night for a week can show a marked decrease in speed and accuracy.

Good nutrition and exercise are important for our health and beauty, but sleep is crucial, too. Sleeping provides your body with more than just rest. When we are sleeping, our body is healing and repairing itself. Experts say that you need eight hours of sleep a night. This helps prevent a washed out complexion, puffy bloodshot eyes and dark under eye circles (like the permanent ones living on my face). Getting enough sleep also helps ensure that you will have peak alertness and energy.

A good night’s rest has always been called
beauty sleep—and it is no myth. New research shows that individuals who are not sleep deprived have an increased capacity to lose weight and keep it off. Poor sleeping habits also cause you to age at an accelerated rate, both physically and metabolically.

LOSE WEIGHT? Did they just say lose weight? I'm listening!

I read the
reasons. A good night’s sleep reduces stress levels, which reduces the stress hormone cortisol, and there's something there about ashwagandha and phosphatidylserine, blah, blah blah. The point is who CARES how it works, as long as it works??

More wonderful things about beauty sleep:

Studies show that skin cells regenerate slightly faster at night than during the day. All the more reason to make sure you get your beauty sleep. Here's another tidbit of information.

Cosmetic chemists know, for example, that many anti-aging ingredients stay active longer when they're not exposed to sunlight. Retinoids, which speed cell turnover, "can break down chemically with light exposure and become ineffective," says Julian Omidi, MD, a dermatologist in private practice in Los Angeles. Other "anti-agers"-- such as topical vitamins, including C and E--don't hold up well in sunlight or air. They're in both day and night skin care products, but you probably get more antioxidant bang for your buck when you apply them before you go to sleep.

YAY! Considering how much some of those products cost, more bang for your buck is a good great thing.

What we all know is that, with a good night's sleep, everything looks and feels better in the morning. Both the brain and the body are refreshed and ready for a new day.

Here are three beauty tips for skin care in your sleep to add more beauty to your sleep:

Sleep flat on your back: Smashing your face into a pillow creates fold lines that eventually become permanent if they're repeated every night. Spending time on your back also helps counter the effects of gravity that accumulate during the day. In a recent study of 38 women and men, Japanese researchers found there was greater wrinkling in the afternoon than in the morning; they concluded that the face literally falls with gravity as the day progresses. At night, you get a chance to reverse that.

Stay hydrated: "Keeping skin moist from the inside out is a simple, relatively inexpensive, and quite effective moisturizer," says Pinnell. Drink six to eight glasses of plain
water throughout the day and include omega-3 fatty acids (found in fish and nuts) in your diet, says Dale Prokupek, MD, a Beverly Hills internist and an associate professor of gastroenterology and nutrition at UCLA. To help avoid moisture loss from the skin while sleeping, turn on a humidifier. "I used one in my bedroom for a dry throat problem and soon realized my skin never looked better," he says. (Be sure to clean the humidifier often, especially if you're prone to allergies.)

Use a moisturizer after bathing: Seal in the moisture that the topmost layer of your skin has absorbed with a hydrating body lotion or cream. Because you're going to bed--not pulling on a silk blouse or cashmere sweater--you can try a body cream that's richer than you would feel comfortable wearing during the day, such as Nivea Body Renewal Night Cream ($10; drugstores). Just before bed is a perfect time to slather your feet--especially dry heels--with a healing, hydrating cream such as Aveeno Intense Relief Foot Cream ($6; drugstores). And a sweep of Sally Hansen Beyond Perfect Healing Cuticle Oil ($5; drugstores) on your nails will keep the cuticles soft and prevent tears. For a final moisturizing touch, massage your hands with Dove Regenerating Hand Cream ($6; drugstores). (** I have not personally tried these products, and have heard neither good nor bad things about them or their performances)

The following simple tips are helpful for sound sleep:

  • Create a bedtime routine. Make an effort to rearrange the pattern of your evenings.

  • Limit your tea and coffee intake to five or six cups a day, and don’t drink any within an hour of your bedtime.

  • You spend a sizable time of your life sleeping, so don’t economize on the mattress and bed you choose. Buy the best. Always use cotton bed sheet while sleeping and your pillows should give enough support to your weary head. Wear loose cotton dress while going to bed.

  • Allow yourself a clear half hour to unwind, bathe, have a warm milk, cleanse your face, brush your hair and teeth – that way, you’ll prepare yourself mentally for sleep. Cleanse your face every night no matter how tired you are with a gentle cleanser.

  • Close your eyes and breathe in very deeply, concentrate on the days pleasant happenings.

  • Relax all your muscles, simple meditation techniques helps in inducing sleep.

  • If your mind seems to be obsessed with any particular problem and keeps reverting to it, try remembering the happy memories. Listen to music.

  • Try taking a gentle walk after dinner. Vigorous exercise late at night is not good, but a quiet stroll can get you in the mood for sleep.

  • Try having at least one early night every week when you’re in bed by 10 at the latest.

Oh, and an added bonus: Children learn what they see. Set a good example for your kids. Show them just how important a good night sleep is for them! http://www.sleepforkids.org/

IT's Friday - and I'm BACK!

I've been taking a bit of a break with the Frump fighting. Ever since I discovered that I weigh "Hmmm hmmm" pounds, I've been feeling frumpier than ever. That process is going slow - My weight has been a little up and down, and I've been discouraged and depressed, but I'm still working on eating healthier, and cutting back on serving sizes.

Exercise?? That's a whole different animule...

I know that weight loss is a painfully slow and frustrating process, so I'm not going to let it get me down. Logically, I know that I cannot expect overnight results, but I've never been so good with the patience. However, I spent a little time this morning re-visiting a few of my fellow Fight the Frump-ers, and I've got a few ideas for getting back on track.

But, that is not what I was planning to discuss today. Today, I'm going to tell you about a lovely little product I discovered recently, which I will never again be without.

It started with a post from one of the lovely Frump-fighters I found through the Fabulous Mrs. Fussypants. I truly wish I could remember which one (I(f you happen to read this, let me know - I would love to link to your post!!). I looked through a zillion old FtF posts this morning, so that I could give credit where credit is due, and provide a little Linky Love, but after 30 minutes, I gave up...

Anyway, she (this mystery woman - hopefully to be named later) was talking about her favorite hair removal method. Which was a Sally Hansen waxing product. Now, I lurves me some Sally Hansen, and the mystery woman made this product sound so great that I went to my local store (rhymes with Tall-Heart) at lunch to check it out. But when I got there, I just couldn't bring myself to do the waxing thing (and now that I've had my brows done, I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't have been able to pull it off go through with it myself.

So, instead I saw this lovely little product:

VEET® In-Shower Hair Removal Cream. I saw that it took 3 minutes, before you hopped in the shower to scrub it off with the little included sponge. Sold!! I tried it and LOVED the results, but it was a rather small container, and I used it up rather quickly.

So back to the store I went, and this time, I picked up this:

VEET® Hair Removal Gel Cream Pump. It's a bigger bottle, for not much more money than the in-Shower product. It takes just a little bit longer (3-5 minutes), and it doesn't have the nifty little sponge, but it does come with a Perfect Touch Spatula, which I couldn't find a picture of, (and I'm sure my description won't do it justice) but it's a wavy plastic "razor-type-thingy", which helps with the hair removal process. Of course, I love this product, too!! And I'm sure that if I were to get one of the other VEET® cream products, that I would love it as well. But, for now, I'm going to stick with this one, I prefer the larger size.

Both have a surprisingly pleasant smell (not quite as "chemical" as the OTHER products I have tried over the years), and it worked great to remove the hair. I used it on my legs and bikini area with no problem (Just make sure you don't actually put it IN anything - not sure what that would do for your girly-parts). If I missed any spots in the shower, (I do that sometimes-the main reason I hate shaving) the hair just comes right off with no problem. I have not had any problems with burning or reactions, but if your worried, I recommend testing it before you go all out and slather yourself. (Although I did not do this first)

So, if you're in the market for a new hair-removal product, I highly reccommend VEET®

Friday again - You know what that means.

I'm fighting frump.

Well, I don't know if that's what you would call it exactly, but here it is all the same.

I have finally reached a point in my life over the past few years where I was mostly happy with myself - with my body. I'm a little overweight, yes, but I was OK with that. I had this arbitrary number in my head. As long as I don't ever get above ___, then I'm content with the way I am. Budman has done a lot for me in this department, because he thinks I'm beautiful and sexy no matter what I weigh or how I look. And most days, that is all that matters to me. He believes that I am the most beautiful creature on the planet, therefore I am.

But yesterday, I stepped on the scale at work, and THERE. IT. WAS. I have reached THAT weight - the one that I SWORE I would never be. And here's the kicker. I'm going to tell you what it was.

Give me a minute to get brave, though.

Ideally, I want to weigh 135. Realistically, I would settle for 160. Unfortunately, at the moment, I am weighing in at 200 lbs. Whew, there I said it. (deep breaths, Melody, it's OK.) I'm thinking that working on my weight loss in 25 lb. increments is probably a good way to go about this.

So, my Frump Fighting today is more like a quest for Frump Fighting advice. I've read many of the other posts over the past few weeks about exercising, eating right, etc. And I really want to follow them all, but here's the thing:

I don't DO exercise. I could probably manage something small, but heck, I get winded going upstairs. (OMG - how pathetic is that!?!)

I LOVE food (see
yesterday's post) and while I do eat healthy, I also eat everything else. I'm not the one who cooks the evening meals in our house right now, so I don't have any control over what is for dinner. I suppose I could go home and have a salad while everyone else is eating something good, but it's not likely to happen.

I'm not expecting to find some magical weight loss program where I can live exactly as I have, and watch the pounds fall off of me. I know that this does not happen in the real world. The way I see it, I need to cut out back on Dr Pepper and drink more water. I need to eat smaller portions. I need to swear off French Fries completely. AND, I need to begin some sort of exercise program - something simple at first, just to get me started.

Anyone have any ideas that worked for you? Any tips for eating better, cutting fat or recipes that you swear by? Any suggestions on a beginner workout routine? I own a recumbent bike, that decorates the living room, and now that spring is arriving, we are spending a lot more time outside. I will be walking for the Alzheimer's Association in September, but I need to do something before then, of course. I've already mentioned what my daily schedule is like - so I'm not looking forward to spending a lot of time on this, but I HAVE to do something. Now that I've reached 200 lbs. THAT WEIGHT, I MUST to do something.

Fighting the Frump - Back with a Vengance?

OK - not a vengeance. But I am back. After being lazy taking a few weeks off to come up with new ideas, I am back to Fight the Frump!!

I've been having a bit of trouble thinking of new ways to Fight the Frump. I've talked about getting rid of the old to make room for the new and I've discussed the wonders a new haircut can do. There was the ever important Beauty Sleep mention and the post where I cheated recapped some of the FtF ideas of the lovely and oh so smart ladies who are Fighting Frump with me every week. Then there was my not so humorous post about what happens when you send a man to do a woman's job.

At this point you're saying "Oh, goodness - Not another recap post! Can't she come up with an original idea??" At least, that's what I would be saying.

I have a busy life (don't we all??) Kids, work, school, blogging other stuff - It's a wonder we ever get anything done - This is no surprise to anyone, I'm sure. Budman and I leave our house each morning at 5:45 while the kids are still in bed. We carpool because gas prices suck - and I arrive at work just before 7:00. This is not that bad, since we now leave our house earlier, and because traffic is not as bad at the butt crack of dawn that early hour. I leave work at 4:30, and we arrive home at 6:00, provided there are no stops to make and no major accidents. We then have dinner, help the kids with homework, I get out the laptop and do my school lessons (which I have also spent my lunch hour doing), play with the kids if I'm lucky before I put them to bed, and then head off to bed myself. Weekends are slightly better, with work & homework removed from the mix - although I still try to find time for my schoolwork. We try to limit our social obligations, but someone always wants us to come for a visit. We try to make time for us to do things as a family. (oh, and just in case you're wondering, I don't leave my kids home alone in bed while I traipse off to work - Grammy takes care of the kids - getting them ready for school, on the bus each morning and Mater to school at noon each day.)

And here it is. My fight the Frump tip. Find some time to do something YOU like to do. Doesn't have to be everyday - In fact, if your life is like mine, there's no way in Hades that you will find the time everyday.

Lately, I have taken up crochet. I'm not terribly good at it, but I like it, it's even something I can do while watching classes on the laptop for school - if it's an easy project. So far, I've made a hat - I was supposed to make two - one for Monkey and one for Mater, but the first one turned out too small and VERY lumpy. So, I switched to something else. The pattern calls it an evening shawl, but it's not really looking fancy enough to be an Evening Shawl. Since my mother (like me) is ALWAYS cold, I thought she might like to have it to wrap around her shoulders while watching TV, or sitting at the movies. My mother NEVER goes anywhere without a sweater or a wrap - LOL! Last night, I started what will probably be a small blanket - no pattern, but I'm trying a new stitch I had never seen before, and really liked.

I hope soon to pick up sewing again. (HA! like I've sewn a lot up to this point.) So far, I made the boys Halloween costumes (Actually, I sewed two little pullover vests - it's less impressive than it sounds) and I sewed (and this one, I'm REALLY proud of) stockings for all seven of us this year. Next I would like to try aprons. This probably won't happen for while, but I like to plan for the eventuality of it anyway. Daydreaming about what fabrics I might use, and what it will look like when it's done, and how it will be the absolute most cutest (yes, I just said that - but only for effect) ever made in the history of aprons.

OK, so go find something you like to do. Scrapbooking, gardening, reading, watching movies, making jewelry - something that makes you feel good - something that relaxes you, or something that invigorates you. Just do something.

It feels good, I swear.

Fighting the Frump - Week 5 (or is it 6?)

OK - so you all have seen the Before and After photos of my haircut. What? You haven't? Shame. Go ahead, take a peek, I'll wait.

.....
I suppose I should get to the point. My fight the Frump tip is this:

Never let your husband go pick out your hair care products at Target while you stay next door at Payless and shop for shoes (which is another upcoming FtF post in itself).

These are the products I found in the basket upon checkout:
In case you can't read that - it says: Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Shampoo and Conditioner

Anyone catching the problem, here yet??

I'll continue.

Also in the basket (and I didn't even notice this one until I got home):
Oh - In case you can't read what it says - That's a bottle of Garnier Fructis Style Curl Shaping Spray Gel

Figured it out yet?

I'll help.

Let's take another look at my Before Photo, shall we? (I was going to post it here, but I can't look at it again - YOU go look.)
Now, let's take a look at Budman - Notice his CURLY locks?
(Boy, he is a handsome devil, though)

What? Sorry.

Think back. Did ANYONE see anything remotely resembling a curl on my head?

No? Weird.

My darling Budman must think I have curly hair, because when I pointed out that I did, in fact, not have any curls at all, he said "I thought that was the stuff we always got."

Bless his little pea-pickin' heart.

The moral of the story:
Buy your own dang hair-care products, or Lord knows what you will end up with.

And I've got to use it, cause I'm too cheap to let it go to waste - or to buy new stuff until the old stuff is gone!

Be sure to Fight the frump with the Fabulous Mrs. Fussypants today!

Well, it's Friday again, and you know what that means. I've been ruminating for days on what my Frump Fighting strategy for this week could be.

Sorry, I've got a couple of ideas, but I haven't had time to do pictures yet, and it just wouldn't be the same without pictures.

Beauty Sleep: Fighting the frump

Before I get to Fighting the Frump with Fussy today, I wanted to point out (For anyone who cares) that I have FINALLY posted the before and after haircut photos that a few of you everyone requested from last weeks Fight the Frump. Please check them out, and tell me what you think how much you love the new 'do!.

Thank you - And without further ado...

As promised- Before & After Pictures

Better late than never

Here we go!

BEFORE: UGH - Frumpy, frumpy!!

AFTER:

I have several pictures, I couldn't seem to find a really good one. I took a few more myself last night, but surprisingly, the best one was taken by Monkey before I put the little ones to bed last night. What does it say that my almost 6yo takes better photos than anyone else??

Anyway, here we go!!

(<--- This is the one Monkey took - I like it best)

I take horrible pictures - I do not understand why.

These were taken the day after the haircut, but I didn't like them, so I took the other pictures last night.

Obviously, I don't look like the movie stars I posted on Friday, so no need to point out the obvious.

Oh - and if anyone has a Frump fighting idea for combatting a double chin, I would LOVE to hear it. (Double chin?? really?? at 33?? Life is so not fair.)

Fightin' the Frump with Hot-Mama Hair!!

Hello! Once again, I'm fighting the frump with the Fabulous Mrs. Fussypants today.

This week, I was supposed to have a wonderful de-frumping post with before and after photos. Unfortunately, I forgot to upload the photos from my camera to the computer, and email them to myself at work. Terrific. So, I'm going to have to TELL you about it, and post the pictures this evening (I hope!!).

Saturday, I decided to follow the advice of a few of last weeks Frump Fighters and went and got my hair cut. I got a swing bob. VERY short - No more ponytails for this girl. All my scrunchies have been rendered useless. When I got home from the salon, Budman said "Hi! I'm Budman, I'm sorry, you have to leave - my wife will be home soon." LOL!! Sunday I did a little of the hair dyeing. I've been getting compliments all week - and I'm feeling FABULOUSLY de-frumpified (is that a word?)

I've been trying to find a picture of a swing bob, and I've had no luck (never mind that I'm SUPPOSED to be working) so picture Victoria (Posh Spice) Beckham's hair (only not anorexic). I swear I'll post the pictures this evening!! (No, I don't honestly think I even remotely resemble Posh Spice, but I've been unable to find a picture of my hair on someone else!) Although, Budman (and one other person) compared it to Jamie Lee Curtis, so I guess maybe I look like this:

Although, I would rather look like this:

Ooh! Maybe I look like this!! Only - blonder..

Or maybe this: (also blond-er)

Maybe not...

This is kinda fun - I may never post the actual photos!!

Join Fussy today with your own Fight the Frump hints!

Have a great day!

***EDIT: I forgot the best thing - well, things, actually. Saturday, I stopped off at the corner store on the way home, to pick up some Dr. Pepper and some beer for the gathering we were having the next day, and the old man at the Gas Station, who sees me at least 4 times a week, didn't recognize me and MADE ME SHOW MY ID!!!!! Yeehaw!

Bet the bestest best thing, is that my hair is SO SUPA EASY to style! I thought I was gonna have to tear the house apart to find my blowdryer and my curling iron, and you know what? I didn't! I just bought some hair gel and some hair spray, and I'm good to go! (And not in a Frumpy way, like I used to)

Friday - 1st ever Fight the Frump!

Hey there! I'm fighting the frump with the Fabulous Mrs. Fussypants today. I've mentioned Fussy before, of course, and her blog is a *can't miss* for me everyday.

I'm having a difficult time admitting this, but...

I'm Frumpy.

There I said it. I racked my brain long and hard this morning to think of SOMETHING that I could contribute to the first ever
Fight the Frump. Finally, it hit me.

I think my main source of frumpiness (is that a word?) is my pack-rat tendencies. My mother (who is not the least bit frumpy at all and tries her best to de-frump me when possible) has a rule: When you buy a new item of clothing, you MUST get rid of one old article of clothing. This is a rule that I have to follow whether we go shopping together or she's bought me clothes for my birthday.

It's a rule that I'm quite awful at following - although I'm getting better. I recently went through all the clothes in my closet, and discovered some REALLY awful pieces that I've had since my first child was born, college or even high school. I'm quite ashamed to admit this, although I did throw away/donate several boxes of crap outdated clothes and shoes, and kept only those things that a) I knew that I would wear, and b) that I SHOULD wear. I still have a long way to go, but I'm on my way. \

So, here is my tip: Throw out items that are old, outdated or worn. (Stained goes without saying - right? Although I have kept one UGLY t-shirt that hangs in my closet for dying my hair doing messy jobs around the house.) If you buy something new, get rid of something old. This assures that you have room in your closet for those supa-fab (to quote Fussy) new things you've just brought home, and of course, you will be doing your part to Fight the Frump.
